After 45 years, local cleaning service continuing to expand offerings to customers
John and Judy Holt, owners of Holt's Cleaning Service in Windom, are proud, humbled and blessed that in 2019 they are celebrating their 45th anniversary in business.
They are humbled that so many of their patrons continue to turn to them for their professional cleaning needs. They are proud that the business is thriving as their son, Zach, is now taking ownership in the family business.
And, yes, they are blessed that they are able to celebrate 45 years in business.
"I never believed we would be in business this long," John admits, noting that son, Zach, will take the business into their next half century.
They started their mom-and-pop cleaning business in 1974 and built it on carpet and upholstery cleaning, water restoration and after-fire clean-up.
"The carpet cleaning is a little lighter today because a lot of laminate floors are going in," John says. "But we have the most powerful carpet steam cleaning equipment you can get."
How respected is the business for its cleaning? When they started, they contracted with Toro for cleaning services and Toro remains a valued customer 45 years later.
Over the years, they have added air duct cleaning, tile refinishing and epoxy flooring to their list of services.
However, there's little question that in recent years, they have been most in demand for their water restoration services.
"We're getting a lot more water restoration jobs, because the insurance adjusters around here know we have the equipment and we're reasonable," John says.
That equipment includes over 50 commercial-grade fans and over 20 commercial-grade dehumidifiers - a fraction of which can easily dry a wet basement in two to three days.
"We really do a little bit of everything," says Zach, who's proudly carrying on the tradition of cleaning excellence started by his parents. "But when we had the July rains last year, water restoration was the only thing we were doing - for weeks."
Perhaps their most underrated service is their after-fire clean-up. They go through the house and handle smoke and water damage. While they don't handle reconstruction, they do all cleaning that needs to be done, including all smoke-damaged items in the home.
"If it's light smoke damage, we go in and clean everything - knickknacks; cupboards, inside and out; windows; walls and ceilings; deodorize carpets; and we'll clean the air ducts if necessary," John says.
"If it's heavy smoke damage, we take everything out of the house, so construction can be done. We'll clean the things than can be cleaned, in our shop, and store it here. We take pictures of the bad stuff, itemize it and let the adjuster know that it's a loss."
Holt's Cleaning Service also offers commercial tile refinishing. "The before-and-after is just amazing," John says. "We'll strip all the floor finish off and put four coats back on."
They also offer air duct cleaning. However, scheduling is tricky since they must have sustained dry weather to run their air duct cleaning unit. One of their newer services is epoxy/florochip flooring, a perfect solution to creating a decorative and durable floor in the home, office, business, shop or garage.
"Epoxy flooring is growing. People are doing that in their basements," John says. "When they have a wet basement and they have to tear out everything, Zach and the crew can put in an epoxy floor," Judy says.
"If you do an epoxy floor with an area rug and you have water in the corner, it's not such a huge deal." Holt's Cleaning is ready to serve area residents in the years ahead.
