10/3/2018 4:53:00 PM WAHS ready to get 'Footloose' for 2018 fall musical
Windom Area High School fall musical director Rachel Axford was all set for her talented group of senior actors to tackle a musical the school had never done before.
And then, after reading through the script and taking a closer look at the parts, she went a different direction, one that more appropriately offered more roles for the 15 seniors and 19 juniors and sophomores (42 total) taking part in the school's 2018 fall musical.
Axford went from the 2001 hit comedy, "Legally Blonde," to a show the theater department staged a decade ago, "Footloose: The Musical."
And how did that go over with the potential cast?
"They loved it," Axford says. "I got texts and emails back from them right away, 'Yea! Footloose!' "
The show is a close representation of the film that filled movie theaters across the country in the mid-1980s. And it features many of the songs that became Billboard hits. Moreover, Windom staged the musical in the fall of 2009, so it was one with which Axford was familiar.
"I have these wonderful girls and I just kept going back to my daughter's class, when we had all those awesome girls and how much fun they had," she says. "We had a ball together and that's what I wanted for this group of kids."
