City of Windom, fire chief announce citywide burn ban

This morning the City of Windom, by order of Mayor Kirby Kruse and Fire Chief Dan Ortmann, announced it has instituted a burning ban within the city limits to coincide with the countywide burning ban.

The ban takes effect immediately. On Monday, Cottonwood County Sheriff Jason Purrington announced a burning ban for all of Cottonwood County.

These burning bans come in the wake of at least a half-dozen fires that occurred around the county, most of which involved the harvest. Extremely dry conditions, low humidity and high winds have increased the potential for major fires.

Obviously, Windom residents are not allowed to burn leaves at this time. The Windom burning ban also includes recreational fires. City Administrator Steve Nasby said the burning ban will remain in place until further notice.

Watch Citizen Online Breaking News for updates on the ban and any fire-related news.
