HBC sinks Wolverines in section final; RCW tops RRC for title

Hills-Beaver Creek had been one of the state's top-ranked nine-man teams all season, and the Patriots lived up to that billing in the Section 3 Nine-Man championship game Friday, cruising to a 52-7 victory over defending state champion Mt. Lake Area at Hills.

The Patriots' quick-strike offense scored on the first play from scrimmage on a 95-yard Tyson Bork run and never looked back, building a 28-7 lead after one quarter.

Bork added a 2-yard touchdown for a 14-0 HBC lead on the second drive of the game.

The Wolverines mounted their best offensive drive of the night on the ensuing possession, marching quickly into scoring territory and hitting a 7-yard touchdown pass from Marcos DeLeon-Lopez to Ethan Nickel. Kolby Kremmin's extra-point kick cut the HBC lead to 14-7.

But the Patriots answered, scoring on a 71-yard Gavin Wysong run. Then, after a Wolverine interception, HBC scored its second touchdown in less than a minute as Bork scored on a 23-yard run, giving HBC a 28-7 lead.

HBC padded the lead in the second quarter, as Wysong scored on a 27-yard touchdown run. Following a Wolverine turnover, Bork cashed in on a 4-yard touchdown. Then, late in the half, Wysong hit Oliver Deelstra for a 30-yard touchdown pass, giving HBC a 52-7 halftime lead.

Neither team scored in the second half.

DeLeon-Lopez led the Wolverines on the ground, rushing five times for 15 yards. He also completed 6-of-17 passes for 47 yards. Tanner Koetzle had three catches for 24 yards. Nickel caught three passes for 23 yards.

State-ranked Renville County West wrapped up an undefeated season with a 40-14 victory over Red Rock Central in the Section 2 Nine-Man championship game, played Friday in Danube.

The Jaguars swung the game by scoring late in the first half to take a 20-8 lead, then added a touchdown on the opening possession of the second half to put the game out of reach.

After forcing a Falcon punt on the game's opening possession, RCW methodically moved downfield, scoring on an 8-yard Brandan Hoberg run. The two-point conversion run gave RCW a quick 8-0 lead.

After the teams traded turnovers, the Falcons capitalized, marching 48 yards in 12 plays, capped with a 1-yard Damon Holmen touchdown run. Luke Willhite hit Joseph Strock with the two-point conversion pass, tying the game at 8-8 late in the first quarter.

The Jaguars answered with a 76-yard, 11-play drive that chewed up half of the second quarter clock. Hoberg capped the drive with a 9-yard touchdown run, giving RCW a 14-8 lead.

The Jaguars forced the Falcons to punt on their next possession, then turned the game fully in their favor with a 79-yard drive in the closing minutes of the half. Hoberg hit Riley Ashburn with a 27-yard touchdown pass with 27 seconds left on the clock, giving RCW a 20-8 halftime lead.

To start the second half, the Jaguars again ate up half of the third-quarter clock, marching 66 yards in 13 plays. Hoberg ended the drive with a 1-yard sneak. The two-point conversion pass gave RCW a 28-8 lead.

After forcing the Falcons to turn the ball over on downs late in the quarter, RCW put the game away in the fourth, scoring on the first play of the fourth quarter on a 46-yard pass from Hoberg to Ayden Gustafson for a 34-8 lead.

RCW picked up its final points on a 6-yard Jaden Kolker run late in the game.

The Falcons ended their season with a 63-yard, eight-play drive, capped by Holmen's 2-yard touchdown run.

Luke Willhite rushed 13 times for 47 yards to lead RRC on the ground. Holmen added 38 yards on 13 carries.

Willhite completed 4-of-9 passes for 25 yards. Mason Strom had three catches for 21 yards.
