Windom school board plans special meeting

The Windom Area school board will hold a special meeting Monday, beginning at 6:30 p.m., at the Windom City Hall council chambers. The meeting also will be conducted over Zoom web streaming.

On the agenda, the board will further discuss the district's plans for the start of the 2020-21 school year. The board also will act to waive policies that conflict with executive orders issued during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Thursday, Gov. Walz and the Minnesota Department of Health issued return-to-school guidelines, which monitor the number of new COVID-19 cases in each county over a 14-day period. The number of new cases per 10,000 residents serves as the basis for the MDH recommendations.

Under the current guidelines, schools in Cottonwood County would be allowed to implement full in-person learning for elementary-aged students and "hybrid" learning for high school.

Supt. Wayne Wormstadt stressed that the hybrid model still calls for all students in the district to attend classes in person. The hybrid model means that classrooms, buses and lunchrooms can be at 50% of their maximum capacity, with social distancing put into place. Desks would be six feet apart. Wormstadt indicated that the district was moving forward with plans to start the school year under that model.
