Windom 000 000 0 = 0-5-0 Lamberton 000 100 x = 1-5-0 For the second time this season, the Windom Pirates dropped a game where the only run scored on a wild pitch Thursday, falling 1-0 in a non-league game at Lamberton.
The Pirates had lost 14-1 to the Long Sox earlier in the season. But Thursday, Pirate pitchers Collin Lovell and Jack Mellstrom held Lamberton to five hits. Lovell worked two perfect innings, with Mellstrom pitching the final four innings, allowing five hits. He did not have a walk or a strikeout.
Lamberton scored the game's only run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Nick Altermatt led off with a triple and scored on a wild pitch. Mellstrom allowed only two more baserunners the rest of the way.
Windom left runners in scoring position in three of the first four innings, then had its best chance to score in the top of the fifth. After a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt and a walk, the Pirates had runners on the corners with one out. Windom set up for a possible double steal, but the runner from first was thrown out without the runner on third advancing. A groundout ended the threat.
Windom then had a leadoff double to start the top of the seventh, but a diving catch in center field turned into a double play, with a groundout to first ending the game.
Joel Riordan had two hits in the Pirate loss.
Mellstrom took the pitching loss.
Windom is now off until July 24, when it begins the Region 13C playoffs. Seeding for the playoffs will be held Monday, with four best-of-three series starting on the 24th. The Pirates will likely play the opening game of the series on the road if the opposing team's field has lights.
