Miller-Sellner, A growing company to meet the growing needs of farmers

To be in business for 55 years takes a dedication to service and quality.

For Doug Miller of Miller-Sellner, service and quality are things he puts his name to every day, offering a full line of Case-IH farm equipment and a top-notch service department to help keep farmers rolling during their busiest times of the year.

Miller said that while the original Miller-Sellner implement in Sleepy Eye dates back to 1964, his family has ties to the farm equipment industry since the 1920s, when his grandfather, Art Miller, began an International Harvester dealership in Evan, which is located north of Sleepy Eye.

"Eventually, my dad was going to buy out his dad," Miller said. "International Harvester told him that he had to find a partner and move to Sleepy Eye. My dad purchased the business and partnered with Norbert Sellner. In 1964, Miller-Sellner evolved and moved to Sleepy Eye. For the most part, we say Miller-Sellner has been around since 1964, but we have ties back to the 1920s."

Miller-Sellner currently has four locations: Sleepy Eye, Bingham Lake, Slayton and Fairmont.

After three decades in Sleepy Eye, Miller-Sellner made its first big expansion in 1997, merging with Darfur Implement. In 1998, a new implement was constructed along Highway 60 in Bingham Lake.

Then, in 2012, Miller-Sellner purchased Slayton Implement, further broadening its service base.

Most recently, in 2019, a fourth location in Fairmont has been added, expanding the company's reach and broadening its service capability. "It's a very exciting opportunity,"

Miller said. "We got a call from a merger and acquisition company, asking if we'd be interested in adding another location. At the time, we said we'd take a look at it, but we didn't want to interfere in another Case-IH dealership's territory.

"It turns out it was a neighboring dealership in Fairmont that was looking to sell, so we decided to pursue the opportunity."

Case-IH has a rich history of serving the Fairmont area - something Miller is looking forward to continuing.

"Fairmont actually at one time was a company-owned store in the 1980s," Miller said. "We're not starting from scratch in Fairmont. We'll be taking ownership of an existing implement there. For the existing customers down there, not a lot will change. We'll still have a full line of Case-IH equipment and a full service department on site."

But expanding into Fairmont broadens the network for Miller-Sellner regarding equipment, parts and even staff.

"It allows us greater opportunities to share resources," Miller said. "With today's equipment, you need to have good people with good product knowledge. With multiple people at each of our locations, they'll be able to connect with each other to best answer customers' questions or resolve any issues that arise.

"Having another store also gives us better availability of parts. We can share parts between all four of our locations. And the same goes for whole goods. If one store doesn't have something, another store might. That way, we can get the parts or products that same day from another one of our stores, rather than ordering them and having to wait for them to arrive." To ensure that, a parts truck runs daily between the four locations.

Miller added that Case-IH continues to be at the forefront of the latest technological advances in tractors and combines, including GPS driving capabilities and compatibility of monitoring systems.

But two major advances have helped with ease of operation and maintenance of equipment.

"Farmers today are getting bigger and need more help," Miller said. "Case-IH is making equipment easier for operators to use. The technology of today basically allows someone to get in a combine and drive.

"Another major advance is remote troubleshooting. If a farmer has a breakdown, we have an outstanding service department to get their equipment repaired and get them back in the field. Case-IH has technology coming that will allow a technician in the shop to remotely connect to a tractor in the field and look at how the tractor is operating if an operator has an issue. They can troubleshoot right from the shop, without even having to go out to the site. That saves the farmer time and, in farming, time is money."

It's that kind of quality equipment and service that Miller-Sellner is proud to provide.

"We've built a reputation for having top-line equipment and service," Miller said. "By expanding into Fairmont, we're able to share our experience and build on that reputation."
