5/15/2019 3:00:00 PM Thanks to Disneyland, Bernieri spends 2018-19 school year in Windom
If you asked Fernanda Bernieri when she first might have entertained the idea of becoming an exchange student to the United States it quite likely was in 2014.
"I had a family trip with my mom and stepdad to Disneyland," Fernanda says, now a little more than a month from returning to her home in Curitiba, Brazil. "That's when I realized that English is very important and I really should learn it - because I wanted to go back to Disneyland."
Until taking that trip, Fernanda literally "hated" English.
"I was failing that class," she says now with a laugh.
"I started to take some classes in my house. My grandma paid for the classes, so my mom and I, my aunt and my grandpa were all taking classes at home with a teacher for an hour-and-a-half each week and I really started to like learning English."
And she speaks very good English with only a slight accent.
