Update on scheduled extra-curricular activities for today

Windom Area Schools announced last night that, despite the decision to close school, it intended to allow any varsity, B-squad and JV-level activities for today to be held as scheduled.

That included the 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. performances of the Windom Area High School winter musical.

All junior high sports and middle school play practice for today are cancelled.

Winds have calmed throughout the region after blizzard conditions closed school yesterday and today. The area remains in a wind chill warning through this morning, with temperatures at nearly 10-below-zero, but calm winds have kept the wind chill ranges from reaching extremely dangerous levels since the overnight hours.

Windom Activities Director Dane Nielsen said that the scheduled girl/boy basketball doubleheader between Windom and Jackson County Central for tonight has been postponed, due to JCC school policy cancelling non-section tournament activities when school is closed. A make-up date for the doubleheader, which has now been postponed twice, has not yet been determined.

JCC's school policy also dictated the decision to call off Friday's scheduled boys hockey game between Windom Area and Redwood Valley. That game has been cancelled and will not be rescheduled.

However, as of 9:30 a.m., plans are to play the Section 3A girls hockey tournament game. Windom Area is slated to travel to Luverne for a 6 p.m. contest. The semifinal round of the tournament is scheduled for Saturday. However, most schools in the tournament have cancelled classes for the day today. It has not yet been determined whether or not the section will allow the first-round games to be moved to tomorrow and the semifinals to Monday. The section championship game is scheduled for Tuesday, beginning at 7:30 p.m., at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter.

Nielsen stated that the Windom-Mt. Lake wrestling team's matches in New Ulm for tonight would be held as planned, despite the fact that New Ulm also closed school for the day. Additionally, he was double checking the status of the Cobra gymnastics meet in Luverne. As of 9 a.m., both those events will be held as scheduled.

As for other area schools, Fulda AD Colby Pack announced via Twitter that the scheduled basketball tripleheader in Fulda tonight would be held as scheduled. Fulda's boys basketball will play Hills-Beaver Creek, beginning with the B-squad at 5 p.m., followed by the varsity at 6:15 p.m. Then, at roughly 7:45 p.m., the Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda girls basketball team would take on Westbrook-Walnut Grove.

However, the scheduled boys basketball game between Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey and Westbrook-Walnut Grove has been postponed until Saturday, beginning with the B-squad at 4 p.m., in Westbrook.

The Red Rock Central boys basketball game against Adrian, scheduled for tonight, has been postponed to Feb. 15. The game will be played as a boy/girl doubleheader in Lamberton, with the varsity boys game at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity girls game. The B-squads will play at opposite times in the RRC Auditorium.

Further announcements will be posted as they become available throughout the day.
