A 39-year-old Windom man was sentenced to 150 months, or 12½ years, in prison following his guilty plea on a charge of second-degree murder without intent, while committing a felony.
Jamie Voelker accepted a Norgaard plea of guilty of second-degree murder, as well as a charge of first-degree burglary, stemming from the July 2025 shooting death of his mother, 70-year-old Kathryn Voelker of Windom.
Defense attorney John Barragry offered a motion for a downward disposition departure from sentencing guidelines. However, Judge Christina Wietzema denied the motion. She also denied the state’s request for the maximum recommended sentence of 180 months in prison.
Voelker will serve at least 100 months in prison, with a maximum of 50 months of supervised release. He also received credit for 435 days of time served.
The sentence of 33 months in prison for the guilty plea for first-degree burglary will be served concurrently.
More from Wednesday’s sentencing hearing will appear in the Oct. 7 print and e-editions of the Citizen.
