Minnesota Valley Lutheran’s ground game battered the Windom Eagle defense in the first half Friday night as the Chargers spoiled Homecoming for the Eagles with a 35-0 decision at Island Park.
MVL churned out 243 yards on the ground in the game, with most coming in the first half. The Chargers finished with 290 yards of total offense, compared to 88 yards for the Eagles.
MVL wasted no time, scoring four plays into the game with a 32-yard run for a 6-0 lead.
Late in the first, the Eagles were pinned deep in their own end. After a three-and-out, MVL blocked a punt, scoring on the next play on a 5-yard run.
Following another three-and-out, MVL needed just six plays to find the end zone with a 31-yard touchdown run for a 21-0 lead.
Windom was able to move across midfield on the ensuing possession, but the drive stalled out with the punt resulting in a touchback. On the next play, MVL’s Ben Riesgraf smashed through the line and raced 80 yards for a touchdown and a 28-0 lead.
The Eagles again moved past midfield on the ensuing drive, but three straight sacks turned the ball over on downs. A 23-yard completion and a defensive pass interference penalty put the ball at the 1, with MVL scoring on a quarterback sneak with five seconds left in the first half for a 35-0 lead.
In the second half, the Eagle defense stiffened, limiting MVL’s first-team offense in the third quarter, but the Eagles turned the ball over on downs and had an interception, halting a pair of drives. Windom’s final drive pushed the ball to the MVL 30, but a sack ended the game.
Gavin Hetterich rushed four times for 18 yards in the loss. Easton Miller completed 8-of-18 passes for 89 yards. Will Skarphol finished with four catches for 43 yards.
