Waterfowl hunting season opens Saturday

The Minnesota waterfowl hunting regular season opens Saturday, with hunting hours from a half-hour before sunrise until sunset.

Local DNR Wildlife Manager Brian Nyborg noted the early teal hunting season in the area went very well despite warm temperatures. With cooler, wetter weather in the past week, many of the early teal have moved out of the area, with birds starting to come in from the north.

The only limit change is hunters are now allowed to harvest three pintails as part of their six total daily limit of ducks. Other species-specific limits within those six birds include:

• Mallard: 4 daily, with only one hen mallard permitted
• Wood duck: 3 daily
• Scaup: 2 daily
• Redhead: 2 daily
• Canvasback: 1 daily
• Black duck: 1 daily

Hunters also may harvest five geese during the season.

Additionally, the season will again see a split in the southern zone. The season will run through Oct. 4, then will resume on Oct. 17. Duck season will then run through Dec. 6, with goose season running through Jan. 6.
