Paul Voth passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 15th, at Ava’s House in Sioux Falls, South Dakota
Paul was born on November 2, 1938, to Paul and Charlotte (Williams) Stenberg in Saint James, Minnesota. When Paul was five years old, his father passed away from a brain aneurysm. Later, his mother remarried Henry “Hank” Voth, and Paul took the Voth family name. He was raised in Blue Earth, Minnesota. After losing his dad, Paul spent lots of time with his grandpa Christ Stenberg, who he adored.
While attending high school in Blue Earth, Paul met the love of his life, Deanna Howard. Both worked at the Green Giant plant, where Paul famously caught Deanna’s attention by tossing corn mush at her. They were high school sweethearts and were married on November 28, 1959.
Together, Paul and Deanna made their home in Windom, where they raised their three children, Jake, Tom, and Lynda. They shared more than 60 years in the same loving home, creating a lifetime of memories with family and friends.
Paul was an avid outdoorsman who spent much of his life outside. As a teenager, he discovered the Whitefish Chain of Lakes in northern Minnesota, which became his favorite place to be. Family summers were spent there fishing, boating, waterskiing, and snowmobiling in the winter, creating countless cherished memories. He also had a lifelong passion for hunting and trapping.
Playing cards was another of Paul’s great joys. He taught his children to play at a young age. Spending countless hours around the table playing Cribbage, Buck, 500, 31, and Hearts became treasured family traditions. He continued playing in his weekly poker game with friends until just a few years ago. The same goes for playing pool. He taught his kids and grandkids how to play, and played in a pool league for many years.
Paul was known for his quirky sense of humor and his talent for practical jokes. He loved making people laugh and creating fun holiday memories for his family. He was also famous among family for making the world’s best pancakes and bean soup.
Paul had several careers throughout his lifetime. In his younger years, he owned a body shop in Windom. Later, he worked for Gopher Bumper Exchange, calling on body shops to deliver new and repaired chrome bumpers. In his later years, he became an expert in collectible knives, buying, selling, and repairing them. Combining his expertise in knives with his love of the outdoors, he also wrote numerous articles for The Outdoorsman magazine on knife collecting, hunting, trapping, and even recipes for cooking wild game.
Above all else, Paul was a caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. His love for his family was evident and he was always there when his family needed anything. His legacy lives on through the many lives he touched. He will be missed dearly and remembered always.
Paul is survived by his children, Jake Voth of Windom, Tom (Jody) Voth of Windom, and Lynda (Jeff) Jones of Shakopee; his grandchildren, Sam Voth, Laura (Duke) Krumwiede, Joe Voth (Cara Nielsen), and Jack Treanor; and his great-grandchildren, Jersey and Paisley Krumwiede.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Deanna Voth; his brothers, James Voth and Richard Voth; his mother, Charlotte Kabe; his father, Paul Stenberg; and his grandfather, Christ Stenberg.
Paul’s family finds comfort in the memories he created, the values he instilled, and the love he shared throughout his life.
