At an emergency meeting Monday, the Windom City Council approved the demolition of an unsafe structure, which was the site of a law enforcement standoff early Saturday morning.
Police Chief Scott Peterson noted that numerous shots were fired from a home in the 1000 block of Drake Avenue, damaging neighboring homes and vehicles. Attempts to contact the suspect, who was identified as 69-year-old James Carey, were unsuccessful. A specialized crane was used to breach the building, with Carey being found in a crawlspace.
Building inspector Matt Fast noted the efforts to gain access to the building created a structural danger, with concern for the condition of natural gas lines and equipment.
More on Saturday’s incident and Monday’s meeting appear in the Sept. 23 print and e-editions of the Citizen.
