County sets preliminary levy hike at 6%

Taxpayers in Cottonwood County will see an increase in their 2027 tax bill, but the Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners was determined to keep that hike as low as possible.

At Tuesday’s meeting, the board discussed the preliminary levy after several meetings where the budget had been discussed. While noting the county is in good financial condition, the board acknowledged several immediate areas to address with the levy.

Ultimately, the board approved a preliminary levy of $15,391,893 for 2027, which is a 6% increase from this year’s levy.

The final levy will be approved in December after the Truth in Taxation hearing. By law, the final levy may be lower than the preliminary levy but cannot be higher.

More from Tuesday’s meeting appears in the Sept. 16 print and e-editions of the Citizen.
