FOOTBALL: Mavericks thump Eagles in opener

Windom 00-00-00-00 = 00
MCW 16-14-30-00 = 60

The Windom Eagle offense was stuck in reverse much of the night Friday, as the Eagles opened the season with a 60-0 loss to Martin County West in Trimont.

The Eagles were held without a first down for the game. Including bad snaps and four quarterback sacks, the Eagles were held to -23 yards of offense for the game.

Windom forced an early turnover, recovering a fumble on MCW’s second offensive play of the game, but the Eagles went three-and-out on each of their first two possessions.

MCW got on the board as Pierce Rohman scored on a 5-yard run. The two-point conversion gave MCW an 8-0 lead.

After another three-and-out and a long punt return, MCW needed just two plays to score, as Rohman had a second 5-yard touchdown run for a 16-0 lead.

After forcing a fourth Eagle punt, MCW quickly moved 57 yards to paydirt, as Rohman scored his third 5-yard touchdown run of the game for a 22-0 lead.

Windom threw an interception on its next possession, with the Mavericks needing just one play to convert as Maddux Faber hit Lixon Forsberg for a 43-yard touchdown pass for a 30-0 lead.

MCW had one more drive late in the first half, but the Eagle defense held firm on fourth down from the Windom 13 with time running out in the half.

But the second half proved especially disastrous for the Eagles. Rohman returned the opening kickoff of the half 75 yards for a touchdown. Then, after a quick Eagle three-and-out, Rohman scored on a 33-yard run for a 46-0 lead.

Another three-and-out led to a punt, which MCW’s Preston Cepress returned 65 yards for a touchdown.

Windom’s next possession saw the Eagles throw their third interception of the night, which Cepress returned 46 yards for a touchdown and a 60-0 lead.

Hugo Lopez led the Eagles on the ground with 13 yards on five carries. Easton Miller completed 3-of-13 passes for 22 yards.
