Mayor Hilary Mathis has rescinded her veto to override a recent city council decision to sell Windomnet to Federated Rural Electric and Broadband for $7.9 million.
The decision occurred after considerable discussion about the issue during a 4.5-hour meeting last night and then again at tonight’s city council meeting.
Mathis said she sees this as the only way to move forward.
“We either sell or remain in perpetual limbo,” Mathis told the council tonight.
The sale to Federated now moves forward to the formation of a purchase agreement. First and second ordinance readings are already completed, so no further council action is required other than approval of the purchase agreement.
Prior to seeking bids, the council added a condition regarding the need for Minnesota Public Utilities Commission and Federal Communication Commission filings. The buyer will be responsible for all PUC and FCC filings, with the city contributing up to $10,000 in matching funds for expenses. All three bidding companies agreed with this condition.
