The pop-ups claim a computer is infected with a virus or is locked and instructs people to call a phone number for help. The Sheriff’s Department advises people to not call the phone number.
The pop-ups are designed to trick people into giving someone remote access to their computer and personal information.
The best advice is: when in doubt, close the browser and contact a trusted computer professional.
