The Windom Pirates opened the Region 10C playoffs in commanding fashion Wednesday night, building a commanding lead for a 10-3 victory over the Fox Lake Foxes at Island Park.
The Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the first. Alex Fink was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate the game’s first run.
Windom blew the game open in the bottom of the fourth, sending 12 hitters to the plate and scoring seven times. Luke Gilbertson drove in a pair on a double to deep center field. Gilbertson scored on a wild pitch and Brett Willaby scored when Quintin Tietz reached on an error. Keenan Wenzel followed with a two-run single and Alex Borsgard hit an RBI single for an 8-0 Windom lead.
The Pirates stretched the lead to 10-0 in the sixth. Drew Rothenberger hit an RBI double and scored on a sacrifice fly from Fink.
Fox Lake kept the game alive with two runs in the seventh and scored once in the ninth, but a pop-out ended the threat and the game.
Wenzel and Rothenberger each had three hits in the win. Borsgard added a pair of hits.
Gilbertson worked six scoreless innings for the victory, allowing three hits and a walk while fanning seven.
The win gives the Pirates a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. Game two of the series will be played Friday in Truman, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Game three, if necessary, will be played Sunday at Island Park, beginning at 2 p.m.
