The Windom Eagle offense was on the attack from the start Saturday, pouncing on Montevideo pitching to claim a 16-5 victory in the Section 3AA playoffs at Marshall.
The Eagles hammered out 15 hits and had three multiple-run innings in the victory.
The Eagles got on the board in the top of the first. Hayden Tietz led off with a double, took third on a Jackson Joyce single and scored on a double play grounder.
Montevideo briefly held the lead in the bottom of the first, scoring on a squeeze bunt and an RBI single for a 2-1 lead. But the Eagles regained the lead for good in the top of the third.
Matt Redman led off with a walk, Tietz reached on an infield single, with Redman scoring on an errant throw. Joyce hit an RBI single and Stevie Meyer ripped a two-run double, giving the Eagles a 5-2 lead.
Montevideo trimmed the deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the third, scoring two runs on an error.
But the Eagles padded the lead in the fifth, sending nine batters to the plate to score five runs. Easton Piotter and Ben Ludewig hit RBI singles, Redman ripped a two-run triple and Tietz hit an RBI single for a 10-4 lead.
Montevideo cut the deficit to 10-5 in the sixth, but the Eagles sent 10 batters to the plate in the seventh, adding six more runs. Joyce plated a run on a fielder’s choice, with a run scoring on an error. Nielsen hit an RBI single, Meyer added an RBI double and Matthew Voehl ripped a two-run double for the game’s final runs.
Tietz led the Eagles with three hits, as six Eagles had multiple hits in the win.
Joyce earned the pitching victory, working the first five innings. He allowed four runs on five hits, walked two and struck out two.
With the win, the Eagles will face Fairmont in the winner’s bracket final today (Monday) at Marshall, beginning at 5 p.m. The winner advances to Thursday’s section championship series, while the loser will drop to an elimination bracket game Tuesday.
