The Windom Eagle softball team rallied from an early deficit, but Luverne scored in the top of the seventh inning Tuesday, claiming a 4-3 victory over the Eagles in the Section 3AA playoffs at Pipestone.
The loss ended the Eagles’ season with a 10-11 overall record.
The Cardinals jumped to a lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on a two-run home run and an RBI double.
The Eagles tried to chip into the deficit in the third, as Brita Tjentland hit an RBI single, but a strikeout with the bases loaded ended the threat.
Then, in the fifth, the Eagles tied the game. Alivia Letcher drew a one-out walk and Anja Nielsen launched a two-run home run, tying the game at 3-3.
Windom mounted a threat to take the lead in the sixth, putting runners at second and third with two outs, but a flyout ended the threat.
Then, in the seventh, Luverne got a leadoff double and bunted the runner to third. With two outs, Tenley Behr singled up the middle, driving in the go-ahead run.
The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the seventh. Letcher led off with a single and stole second. Nielsen was intentionally walked with one out. But a flyout and a groundout ended the threat, the game and the Eagles’ season.
Nielsen and Miranda Peterson had two hits each in the loss.
Nielsen allowed 12 hits and struck out 11 in the loss.

Mt. Lake Area/Comfrey advanced to the double-elimination portion of the Section 2A Tournament Tuesday with a 13-5 victory over Madelia at Mt. Lake.
The Wolverines raced to the lead in the first inning, scoring five runs to take early command of the game. Ellamae Peters hit an RBI single, Ashlyn Pfeiffer hit a two-run triple, Kylie Phommachan had an RBI single and Kelby Janzen hit an RBI double.
Pfeiffer added an RBI single in the second for a 6-0 Wolverine lead. Mikaya Schroeder then hit a two-run double in the fifth for an 8-0 lead.
Madelia cut the Wolverine lead in half in the sixth with a grand slam home run, but the Wolverines answered in the bottom of the inning, scoring five insurance runs. Pfeiffer hit an RBI single, Janzen hit a sacrifice fly that wound up scoring two runs, a run scored on an error and Julia Brinkman added an RBI single.
Pfeiffer and Brinkman each had three hits in the win. Peters and Schroeder had two hits each.
Pfeiffer earned the pitching win, allowing four hits and two walks while striking out six.

Sleepy Eye jumped to an early lead and never looked back Tuesday, defeating Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove 5-1 in the opening round of the Section 2A Tournament at Sleepy Eye.
The loss ended RRC/WWG’s season with a 4-17 overall record.
Sleepy Eye scored in the bottom of the first, then had a two-run double in the third. Single runs in the fourth and fifth innings gave the Indians a 5-0 lead.
RRC/WWG was able to snap the shutout in the top of the seventh, as Carlie Ross hit an RBI single. But the Falcons left two runners on base, ending the game.
DeAnn Roiger had two hits in the loss for the Falcons.
Ross took the pitching loss, allowing nine hits and two walks while striking out four.
