The Windom Pirates amateur baseball team opened the 2026 season with a commanding 11-3 victory Wednesday against the St. James Athletics in a non-league game at St. James.
The Pirates showed a patient eye at the plate, drawing 12 walks in the season-opening win.
The Pirates wasted no time racing to a lead, scoring seven times in the top of the first inning. Pirate newcomer Chase McDaniel got Windom on the board with an RBI single. Hayden Tietz drew a bases-loaded walk, Brett Willaby hit an RBI single, Luke Gilbertson and Tietz scored on wild pitches and Jake Tauer hit a two-run single for a 7-0 lead.
The Pirates added a run on a wild pitch in the third. Josh Garrison added an RBI groundout in the fourth. David Volk plated a run when he reached on an error in the sixth and McDaniel hit an RBI triple in the top of the ninth.
Tauer and McDaniel had two hits each in the win.
Five pitchers toed the rubber for the Pirates in the win. Luke Gilbertson picked up the victory, working one inning of shutout relief.
