Two women have been charged with felony second-degree burglary in Cottonwood County District Court following an alleged break-in at a Windom apartment.
According to the complaint, Kiana Rae Erickson, 21, of Windom, and McKinley Marie Eagan, 22, of Mankato, are each charged with one count of second-degree burglary of a dwelling. The felony charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison, a $20,000 fine, or both.
According to the complaint, officers were dispatched at about 8:21 p.m. Feb. 20 to a Windom apartment after a burglary was reported. Officers observed the residence appeared ransacked. The victim reported missing items including jewelry, pots and pans, a black safe, bottles of Tito’s vodka and Pink Whitney, and nail products. The total value of items reported stolen was $4,616.
The police complaint said the victim pointed to a chalkboard message reading “don’t be trashy” and told officers she believed Erickson and Eagan were responsible. The victim said Erickson had access to a master key through a maintenance connection at the apartment complex.
According to the complaint, officers went to Erickson’s apartment on First Avenue North in Windom, where they observed bottles matching the stolen liquor in plain view.
Additional items recovered included hair clips and a pink Juicy makeup bag, which the victim later identified as hers, the complaint states.
According to the complaint, Eagan admitted she previously lived with the victim and entered the apartment with Erickson while the victim was away.
The complaint states she acknowledged taking jewelry and writing the message on the whiteboard. Erickson later confirmed she used a master key to access the apartment and entered knowing the victim was not home, according to the complaint.
If convicted, each woman faces up to 10 years in prison, a $20,000 fine, or both.
