A milestone night turned into a record-breaking night for the Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey boys basketball team Tuesday, as the Wolverines claimed a 79-70 victory over Red Rock Central in Lamberton.
Senior Aidan Olson put the Wolverines on his back in the game, breaking a single-game program scoring record by finishing with 44 points. In the process, Olson surpassed 1,000 points for his career.
The Wolverines’ previous single-game scoring record was 42, held by Carter Kirk.
The Wolverines broke out to an early 10-point lead before RRC rallied behind its own big-time scorer. Sophomore Henry Stavnes hit 16 field goals in the game, finishing with 41 points. His hot shooting gave the Falcons a one-point halftime lead.
But the second half was controlled by Olson, who scored 23 of his 44 points in the final 18 minutes. The second half saw RRC rally twice from six-point deficits to tie the game or take the lead, but MLAC ended the game with a 9-0 run, with Olson sealing the win with four straight free throws in the closing minute – the first of which put him at the 1,000-point mark for his career.
Olson finished with six three-pointers and was 12-of-13 from the line for the game. He also added 18 rebounds to go with his 44 points.
Micah Fast added 10 points and Jordan Khamkhaykeo scored nine in the win.
Stavnes led RRC with 41 points. Finn Batalden added 15 points in the loss.
