Section 3AA Individual
The Windom/Mt. Lake/Butterfield-Odin wrestling team had seven medalists and one state qualifier from the Section 3AA Individual Tournament, held Friday and Saturday at Hutchinson.
Cobra senior Kameron Koerner advanced to the Class AA State Tournament for the second year in a row after capturing runner-up honors at 145 pounds.
Koerner opened the tournament as the second seed in the bracket and won his opening bout by fall in 1:03. Koerner then captured a 5-2 semifinal victory over Dawson DeCamp of Marshall to advance to the championship.
In the finals, Koerner dropped a 10-4 decision to the state’s top-ranked wrestler at 145 pounds, Ben Gunlogson of Dawson-Boyd/Lac Qui Parle Valley/Montevideo United.
Damien Davison added a fourth-place finish at 172 pounds. Davison advanced to the semifinals with a pair of falls before dropping an 8-6 decision to Tyson Louwagie of Marshall in the semifinals. Davison then won a 10-4 decision in the wrestlebacks before dropping an 11-2 major decision to Caleb Nelson of New London-Spicer in the third-place match.
Fifth-place finishers for the Cobras were Evan Kish (114), Matthew Voehl (121), Hyatt Hansen (133), Elliot Xayavong (160) and Pierre Robinson (215).
Koerner (37-8) will face junior Jake Kos of Simley (47-3) in the opening round of the state tournament on Thursday. Koerner was ranked sixth in the state at 145 pounds in the final ratings by The Guillotine, while Kos was ranked second in the state at 139 pounds in the final state poll.
Section 3A Individual
Red Rock Central had six medalists but had no individual state qualifiers at the Section 3A Individual Tournament, held Saturday in Springfield.
The Falcons had one wrestler advance to the section finals. At 107 pounds, top-seeded Braxton Weber had a bye to the semifinals and won an 18-8 major decision. But Weber dropped an 8-6 decision in the championship to Payten Sorbel of Jackson County Central. Weber than was pinned by Brody Kopp of Luverne in a true-second match, finishing in third place.
Jonah Skarupa advanced to the semifinals at 215 pounds but lost by fall in the semifinals. He then won a bout in the wrestlebacks, but was pinned in the third-place match to finish in fourth place.
Mason Weber added a fifth-place finish at 114 pounds. Jackson Radmaker (121), Marshal Willhite (133) and Noah Schunk (145) each finished in sixth place.
