A goal from Daniel Staples at the 4:22 mark of overtime lifted the Windom Area boys hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Redwood Valley in the pigtail round of the Section 3A Tournament Tuesday in Windom.
Andrei Rivera and Cormac Raderstorf assisted on the winning goal, which was the second of the game for Staples.
Redwood took a 1-0 lead in the opening period before the Eagles answered early in the second. Isaiah Adams took a feed from Ayden Endreson, raced into the offensive zone and snapped a wrist shot over the shoulder of the Cardinal goalie, tying the game at 1-1.
The Eagles then took the lead 25 seconds into the third period, as Staples took a feed from Rivera and stuffed home the go-ahead goal. But Redwood Valley tied the game at the 3:48 mark of the third with a power play goal.
That sent the game to overtime, where the Eagles had offensive possession much of the extra time and outshot the Cardinals 4-0 before Staples netted the game-winner.
The Eagles outshot Redwood 45-25 for the game. Kole Espenson finished with 23 saves in the win.
