The Windom Area girls hockey team came out swinging, but Fairmont’s offense overwhelmed the Eagles, as the Cardinals cruised to a 12-2 victory in the Section 3A playoffs Thursday in Fairmont.
The loss ended the Eagles’ season with a 6-17-1 overall record.
The Eagles made an early statement, scoring just nine seconds into the game. After winning the opening faceoff, Alicia Meyeraan got the puck to Ashlyn Koch, who raced through the Fairmont defense and snapped a shot over the shoulder of the Cardinal goalie for a stunning early 1-0 lead.
But the Cardinals answered, peppering the Eagle net with 28 shots in the opening period to score five goals. Three game in a three-minute stretch, starting at the 5:07 mark, with the final two coming 24 seconds apart late in the period.
The Cardinals then scored 10 seconds into the second period and added a goal at the 3:12 mark, taking a 7-1 lead.
The Eagles tried to close the gap, as Koch took a feed from Brekkyn Rossow and scored on a breakaway goal to make the score 7-2. But Fairmont added a pair of goals minutes later, taking a 9-2 lead into the final period.
Fairmont then added three goals in rapid succession in the third period to seal the win.
Fairmont outshot the Eagles 68-21 in the game. Goalie Fiona Robillard finished with 56 saves.
