During Tuesday’s Windom City Council meeting, Dirk Abraham, chairman of the Windom Telecommunication Commission, responded to complaints and accusations made by Southwest Broadband in an advertisement placed in the October 29 Cottonwood County Citizen.
The city council is currently considering an offer from Federated Rural Electric to purchase the city-owned Windomnet system.
Abraham set out a timeline of events, noting that Telecom was approached by Southwest Broadband in October 2024 about a possible merger or acquisition of Windomnet. During a meeting held in November, Abraham noted that “there was at least some discussion of financial details in that meeting, including what would happen to the current Windomnet debt and so forth.”
In November, Federated Rural Electric, who was installing fiber optic cable throughout the county, approached the City of Windom. An ad hoc committee met separately with Federated in December. After meeting with both groups, Abraham noted that, “we liked what we heard from Federated Broadband much more than we liked what we heard from Southwest Broadband.”
