Fairmont 3-3 = 6
SJWM 0-0 = 0
The Wings United girls soccer team put up a gallant defensive effort Thursday, but couldn’t generate enough offense to keep pace with Fairmont, losing 6-0 to the Cardinals in the Section 2A playoffs at Fairmont.
The Cardinals methodically kept possession in the Wings’ defensive zone much of the game, as the Wings were limited to one shot on goal in the contest.
Fairmont got a goal from Mollie Leiding nine minutes into the contest, then got a goal from Makenzie Gerhardt with 16 minutes left in the first half. Gerhardt added a header off a corner kick for a goal with 11 minutes left in the half, giving Fairmont a 3-0 lead.
The Wings had their best chance to score late in the opening half. A steal at midfield resulted in Ariannie Galdamez speeding toward the Cardinal net with the ball before she was fouled from behind just outside the penalty area, resulting in a free kick. Alivia Letcher’s free kick tried to curve into the net, but sailed just high of the crossbar, leaving the Wings without a goal.
The Cardinals added two goals in a 30-second span eight minutes into the second half, then added their final goal with just over 31 minutes to go in the game.
Fernanda Zepeda Alvarenga played the first half in goal for the Wings while Lydia Fossing played in goal in the second half.
