Carter Sloan Smith, a 42-year-old from Jeffers, faces a charge for felony sssault in the second degree involving a dangerous weapon.
According to the statement of probable cause, the alleged incident occurred on or about August 26, 2025, when Smith reportedly threatened a Cottonwood County sheriff’s deputy with a knife.
According to the complaint, the incident took place during the execution of a search warrant at Smith’s residence in Jeffers. The search was part of an investigation into possible child pornography. During the search, Smith allegedly threatened the deputy with a large kitchen knife after initially stabbing himself in the neck.
The deputy commanded Smith to drop the knife, but he reportedly still pursued the deputy with the weapon. The situation was resolved approximately 15 minutes later when a BCA agent and a Cottonwood County investigator persuaded Smith to relinquish the knife. Smith was then taken into custody and transported to Windom Area Health for treatment of his injuries before being flown to Sioux Falls for advanced care.
The offense carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine.
