Two costly turnovers on offense swung the tide and breakdowns on defense spelled doom for the Windom Eagle football team Friday, as the Eagles fell 49-14 to Luverne at Island Park.
The Cardinals scored twice in the final three minutes of the first half, then scored on the first play of the second half, to blow open what had, to that point, been a close game.
Windom opened the game with a stellar offensive drive, marching 70 yards in eight plays, capped with a 27-yard scoring strike from Jackson Joyce to Hayden Tietz. Rodrigo Hernandez booted the extra point for an early 7-0 Eagle lead.
Luverne answered on the next drive, scoring on a 5-yard pass from Josh Hansen to Jaydon Johnson. The two-point conversion pass gave the Cardinals an 8-7 lead.
After Luverne forced a three-and-out, the Cardinal offense made its first big play of the night, when Hansen hit Jaxon Lais for a 60-yard touchdown strike. The extra-point kick gave Luverne a 15-7 lead late in the first quarter.
On the ensuing drive, the Eagles marched the length of the field in 14 plays. But on first-and-goal from the Cardinal 4-yard line, Joyce’s pass was intercepted, giving Luverne the ball at its own 10. On the next play, Hansen burst 68 yards down the sideline, setting up an 11-yard touchdown run by Darius Dolo for a 22-7 lead.
Luverne forced another three-and-out, with the snap on the punt sailing over the head of the Eagle punter. Luverne took over at the Windom 19 and scored on the next play, as Hansen hit Jaymyn McLaughlin for a 29-7 lead.
Windom appeared to start the second half strong, covering a kickoff well and forcing Luverne to start from its own 19. But on the first play from scrimmage, Hansen hit Lais for an 81-yard touchdown for a 35-7 lead.
Luverne’s defense forced a three-and-out, with Dolo returning the ensuing punt 81 yards for a touchdown. Then, after another Eagle three-and-out, Luverne scored when Hansen hit Matthew Gangestad for a 65-yard touchdown for a 49-7 lead.
Windom capped the scoring in the fourth quarter, when Easton Miller hit Tyler Maras for a 5-yard touchdown pass.
Joyce completed 11-of-20 passes for 139 yards. Tietz had five catches for 100 yards. Stevie Meyer rushed 24 times for 66 yards.

Red Rock Central’s defense was dominant and the Falcon offense was crisp Friday night, as the Falcons rolled to a 46-6 victory over Renville County West in Lamberton.
The Falcons scored touchdowns on six of their first seven drives of the game.
RRC opened the scoring on an 8-yard touchdown run from Abe Stavnes for a 6-0 lead.
On RRC’s next drive, the Falcons were stopped on fourth down in their own territory. RCW capitalized with a 10-yard touchdown run by Jacob Savig, tying the game at 6-6.
But it was all Falcons after that. Late in the first quarter, Stavnes completed a 23-yard touchdown to Jordan Therkilsen.
Then, in the second quarter, Stavnes hit Carter Therkilsen for a 14-yard touchdown pass, then found Jordan Therkilsen for a 33-yard touchdown. Late in the half, Carter Therkilsen intercepted an RCW pass, returning it 38 yards for a touchdown for a 42-6 halftime lead.
Carter Therkilsen added a 14-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter, and RRC capped the scoring when Stavnes hit Jake Erickson for a 79-yard touchdown strike.
Stavnes completed 7-of-8 passes for 222 yards and four touchdowns in the win. Jordan Therkilsen had three catches for 88 yards. Carter Therkilsen rushed 19 times for 178 yards, while Stavnes added 49 rushing yards on eight carries.

Edgerton’s defense completely shut down the Mt. Lake Area offense Friday night, as the Dutchmen rolled to a 60-8 victory at Edgerton.
Edgerton scored touchdowns on its five offensive possessions of the first half and added an interception return for a score and a punt return for a touchdown.
The Wolverines were held to negative offensive yardage until the fourth quarter, when Jordan Khamkhaykeo scored on a 52-yard touchdown run. Damian Aguirre added the two-point conversion run.
Khamkhaykeo rushed four times for 46 yards in the loss. Tryton Khounsanthone completed 2-of-9 passes for 6 yards, with both completions to Jason Wright.
