A goal late in the second half proved to be the difference Tuesday, as the Wings United girls soccer team dropped a heartbreaking 3-2 decision to Mankato Loyola at Windom.
Loyola got on the board first, scoring on a scramble in front of the Wings net.
But the Wings tied the match moments later, when Fernanda Zepeda Alvarenga fired a shot from the top-left corner of the penalty area that trickled through the Loyola keeper’s arms for a goal.
Loyola added a goal late in the first half, taking a 2-1 lead into halftime. But the Wings were able to tie the match with just over 15 minutes to go, when Zepeda Alvarenga blasted a shot from inside the penalty area for the tying goal.
But disaster struck for the Wings in the closing minutes, when a Crusader offensive run resulted in the eventual game-winning goal.
Goalkeeper Catalina Perez finished with 10 saves in the loss.
