The Wings United girls soccer team made a bit of history Thursday afternoon with a 4-1 Big South Conference victory over Worthington at Windom’s track complex.
The four goals scored by the Wings was the team record for single-game goal output.
Additionally, senior Alivia Letcher became the first Wings player to record a multiple-goal game.
Worthington actually struck first in the match, scoring at the half-way point of the opening half. But the Wings answered with just under 13 minutes left in the half, when Letcher lofted a shot with the wind at her back. The shot bounced in front of the Trojan goalkeeper, who got her fingertips on the ball but could not keep it out of the net.
Less than two minutes later, the Wings took the lead for good. Letcher served up a lead pass to Audrina Marquez, who sizzled a shot past the Trojan keeper for a 2-1 Wings lead.
Playing into the wind in the second half, the Wings were able to control the ball in the offensive zone much of the half. The Wings added the lead with just over 34 minutes to go in regulation, when Letcher fired a shot from the top of the penalty area into the top-right corner of the net for a 3-1 lead.
Then, with rain falling and wind strengthening later in the half, a lead pass was chased down by Lah Soe, who flipped a shot over the Trojan keeper for the game’s final goal.
Wings goalkeeper Catalina Perez finished with three saves in the victory.
