For the first time since 2017, the Windom Eagle football team has started the season 1-0.
The Eagles used late scores in the first half to take the lead, then scored on the first possession of the second half, building a commanding lead on their way to a 30-8 victory over Martin County West at Island Park.
After forcing MCW to punt on their opening possession, the Eagles scored on their first offensive series of the season, marching 78 yards in 10 plays. Jackson Joyce hit Hayden Tietz for an 11-yard touchdown pass. Rodrigo Hernandez booted the extra point, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
Early in the second quarter, the Eagles pinned the Mavericks deep in their own end with a punt, but MCW was able to capitalize on a communication breakdown, as Maddex Faber hit Preston Cepress for a 94-yard touchdown pass. The two-point conversion run gave MCW an 8-7 lead.
After Windom turned the ball over on downs, the Eagles got the ball right back, as Tietz recovered a fumble. On the first play after the turnover, Joyce found Tietz streaking down the sideline for a 49-yard touchdown and a 13-8 lead.
With 1:14 left in the half, an interception by Tietz gave the Eagles the ball at their own 24. Windom moved quickly upfield, needing just seven plays to set up a last-second field goal try. Hernandez split the uprights from 26 yards out, giving the Eagles a 16-8 halftime lead.
The Eagles got the ball to start the second half and marched 79 yards in 11 plays, capped with a 3-yard touchdown run by Joyce. The extra point gave Windom a 23-8 lead.
MCW tried to answer, marching to the Eagle 12-yard line before the Eagles forced an incomplete pass on fourth down.
Four plays later, the Eagles had marched 88 yards, capped with a 32-yard touchdown dash by Joyce. The extra point gave the Eagles the game’s final point.
Stevie Meyer had a big game on the ground for Windom, rushing 24 times for 181 yards. Joyce added 50 yards rushing on seven carries.
Joyce completed 15-of-23 passes for 187 yards. Tietz had seven catches for 106 yards.
