The need for child care services in Cottonwood County is clear, but the way to provide those services is not.
For now, it doesn’t appear that those services would be funded through subsidies from the county, either.
At Tuesday’s meeting of the Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners, numerous city and school officials from throughout the county attended to show their support for a proposal for the county to help subsidize child care centers operated by local school districts.
Windom superintendent. Jamie Frank and Windom City Administrator Steve Nasby spoke about the prospect of the county using a half-cent local option sales tax to fund public works and highway projects, potentially opening up general fund money to help fund operation of day care centers, citing that a lack of available child care is impacting economic development.
The board, however, was hesitant, expressing concern about adding a new tax when the county’s levy is projected to be high this year.
No action was taken by the board.
