The Windom Sr. Legion Post 206 baseball team opened the Southwest Sub-State playoffs with a 4-2 victory Thursday over Wells, in a game played at Truman.
Post 206 used aggressive baserunning to score three of its four runs in the game, with aggressive baserunning setting up its other run.
Windom broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third. Quintin Tietz singled and stole second. He then scored all the way from second on a groundout by Matt Redman.
Wells grabbed a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth, scoring on an RBI double and a squeeze bunt.
But Windom answered in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Easton Piotter walked, stole second, then stole third and scored on an errant attempt to throw him out.
In the fifth, Jackson Anderson and Tietz started the inning with back-to-back singles, but Anderson was thrown out trying to score from second on Tietz’s single. Tietz then stole third and scored on a Soren Nielsen sacrifice fly, giving Windom a 3-2 lead.
Windom’s final run came in the bottom of the sixth. Stevie Meyer led off with a double and scored all the way from second when Matthew Voehl beat out a sacrifice bunt attempt.
Tietz had three of Windom’s six hits in the game.
Charles Erickson worked 6-⅓ solid innings, allowing five hits and five walks while striking out six. Jackson Joyce retired the final two batters of the game to earn a save.
With the win, Windom advances to face Luverne tonight, beginning at 8 p.m. in Truman.
The loser of tonight’s game will return to Truman at 11 a.m. Saturday, while the winner will play in the winner’s bracket final Saturday at 5 p.m.
The tournament continues on July 25 with an elimination bracket game at 5 p.m., followed by the true second game at 7:30 p.m.
The championship series begins July 26 at 11 a.m., with a second game, if necessary, at 1 p.m.
