The Windom Pirates recorded their third consecutive shutout win and their ninth shutout win of the season Thursday night, defeating the Springfield Tigers 7-0 in a non-league game at Island Park.
Three Pirate pitchers combined to hold Springfield to just four hits in the game. Luke Gilbertson worked the first four innings, allowing two hits and striking out three. Collin Lovell turned in his longest mound outing of the season, working four innings. He allowed two hits and fanned six. Nick Kulseth worked a hitless ninth, striking out one.
Offensively, the Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the third on a two-run Alex Fink single.
David Volk added a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth, giving Windom a 4-0 lead.
Then, in the seventh, Alex Borsgard ripped a two-run single and Drew Rothenberger plated a run with a groundout.
Jake Tuer had three hits in the win. Gilbertson added a pair of hits.
Windom will close the regular season Sunday, hosting Leavenworth at 6 p.m. at Island Park.
The Pirates will then open the Region 10C playoffs on July 23, hosting the winner of the play-in series between eighth-seeded Fox Lake and ninth-seeded Heron Lake. That game will be at Island Park, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
Heron Lake won the opening game of the best-of-three series against Fox Lake by a 2-1 score Wednesday night. Game two of that series is scheduled for Saturday evening in Truman, with game three, if necessary, taking place Sunday in Truman.
