A 27-year old Worthington woman faces felony assault charges.
According to court documents, Shamika Lashea Hickman, has been charged with domestic assault by strangulation. The incident reportedly occurred on June 25 in Cottonwood County.
According to a police statement, a Windom police officer was dispatched to the area of 11th Street and Eighth Avenue in Windom at approximately 5:56 p.m. on June 25 for an active domestic assault. Upon arrival, the officer observed two males and a female at the scene.
The male victim initially told the officer they were “just messing around,” but later stated that Hickman had hit him. A Cottonwood County sheriff’s deputy who also responded to the scene, reported speaking with a witness who confirmed that Hickman and the victim were fighting, not joking around. The witness stated that Hickman hit the victim several times with both open and closed fists and also choked him.
The police officer observed a mark on the victim’s neck and a stretched-out shirt. The victim confirmed to the officer Hickman had put her hand around his neck, making it difficult for him to breathe until he pushed her away. The victim and Hickman were identified as boyfriend and girlfriend who were living together.
Hickman was arrested and taken to the Cottonwood County Jail.
If convicted, the charge carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
