A big crowd Friday watched an offensive eruption by the Windom Pirates for Striking Out Cancer Night, as the Pirates cruised to a 16-0 victory over the St. James A’s at Island Park.
The Pirate offense was sharp from the start, as Windom pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of six St. James errors in the game.
Windom broke the game open early, plating five runs in the bottom of the first. Alex Fink launched a two-run double. Drew Rothenberger plated a run when he reached on an error and Luke Gilbertson hit a two-run single.
The Pirates added to the lead in the third. Josh Garrison hit an RBI single, followed by a bases-loaded walk to Keenan Wenzel and a Fink sacrifice fly. Rothenberger and David Volk each added a two-run single for a 12-0 lead.
Windom added two runs in the fourth as Fink hit an RBI single and Alex Borsgard drove in a run on a fielder’s choice. Then, in the fifth, Dane Nielsen hit a two-run single to cap the scoring.
Fink, Rothenberger, Quintin Tietz and Gilbertson had two hits each.
A trio of Pirate pitchers combined to pitch a one-hit shutout. Josh Garrison worked three no-hit innings, striking out three but walking seven. Nielsen worked three innings in relief, allowing one hit and striking out eight to pick up the win.

The Windom Pirates improved to 13-1 for the season Sunday, sweeping a pair of First Nite League games.
The Pirates opened the day on the road, claiming a 12-0 victory at Lakefield in six innings. Windom then returned to Island Park for the nightcap, defeating Fox Lake 5-1 in a seven-inning game.
In the opener, the Pirates got on the board in the top of the third. Josh Garrison walked, stole second, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a Brett Willaby sacrifice fly.
The Pirates broke things open in the fourth. Luke Gilbertson and Garrison hit RBI singles, Wallaby had a run-scoring sacrifice fly, a run scored when Jake Tauer reached on an error and Keenan Wenzel hit an RBI single.
Windom added a run on a wild pitch in the fifth, then put the game away in the sixth as Wenzel and Fink had back-to-back two-run singles.
Alex Borsgard had three hits in the win. Wenzel and Fink had two hits each.
Drew Rothenberger picked up the pitching win, working five shutout innings. He allowed three hits and struck out 11.
In the nightcap, the Pirates used a big inning early to take command on their way to the 5-1 victory over Fox Lake.
Windom got on the board first, scoring in the bottom of the second on a Garrison RBI groundout.
In the second, Windom broke the game open. Rothenberger hit an RBI double and Kobe Lovell followed with a two-run single for a 4-0 lead.
Wenzel drove in the final Pirate run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning.
Tauer, Rothenberger and Gilbertson had two hits each in the win.
Ross Ackerman picked up the pitching victory, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out 12.
