BASEBALL: Pirates roll past Pipestone

The Windom Pirates erupted on offense in the late innings Wednesday night, cruising to a 17-0 shutout win over the Pipestone A’s at Island Park.

The Pirates scored six runs in the fifth inning, with five coming after two outs had been recorded. Windom then tacked on eight runs in the bottom of the sixth.

The Pirates got on the board in the bottom of the first on an RBI triple by Keenan Wenzel and a wild pitch.

The Pirates added a run on a Jake Tauer RBI single in the fourth for a 3-0 lead.

Windom then broke the game open in the fifth. A run scored when Kobe Lovell reached on a dropped fly ball. Josh Garrison then ripped an RBI double, followed by a two-run Jake Tauer single, an RBI single from Wenzel and another dropped fly ball, allowing a run to score to make the score 9-0.

In the sixth, the Pirates put the game away. Brett Willaby hit an RBI single, followed by a bases-loaded walk to Jacob Johnson. Alex Fink then ripped a bases-clearing double. Collin Lovell plated a run when he reached on an error, Alex Borsgard hit an RBI single and David Volk plated a run with a sacrifice fly.

Wenzel led the Pirates with four hits. Tauer, Drew Rothenberger and Borsgard had two hits each.

Luke Gilbertson picked up the pitching win, working six shutout innings. He allowed three hits, walked one and struck out seven.
