The Cottonwood County Board of Commissioners entered uncharted waters in more ways than one at a special meeting Monday afternoon.
On a 3-2 vote, the board approved the issuing of an interim use permit to Minnesota Paving and Materials, allowing for a 10-acre expansion of its existing quarry in Section 8 of Delton Township.
Commissioners Larry Anderson and Wayne Maras voted against the application, with chairman Kevin Stevens casting the tie-breaking vote in favor.
The move went against the recommendation of the county’s planning commission, which felt that two major factors could not be met and recommended denying the application.
Additionally, the decision by the board seems likely to be appealed. Regardless, work on the quarry expansion isn’t imminent. There is a 30-day period for filing appeals. Work on the site would not be allowed to begin until the Court of Appeals would make its ruling.
