Sultry weather conditions let to a hot pitchers duel Sunday evening, as the Windom Pirates held off the Jackson Bulls for a 2-1 decision at Island Park.
Pirate pitcher Drew Rothenberger worked seven strong innings on the mound, allowing one run on four hits. He walked one and struck out seven. Collin Lovell tossed two shutout innings in relief, striking out three to earn a save.
The Pirates did all their offensive damage in the bottom of the third inning. Jake Tauer reached on a one-out single, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a Keenan Wenzel RBI double. Wenzel took third on a wild pitch then, against a drawn-in infield, a chopper by Alex Fink was mishandled by the Bulls, allowing Wenzel to score.
Jackson mounted a scoring threat in the fifth, putting a runner at second on a walk and a wild pitch. The Bulls then hit a single to left field, but a perfect throw home by Luke Gilbertson erased the Jackson baserunner and kept the Bulls off the scoreboard.
Jackson did eventually score on a double down the left field line in the seventh, but a line-out to left-center field ended the threat.
Jackson then got a one-out single in the ninth, but back-to-back fielder’s choice groundouts ended the game.
Wenzel had three hits for the Pirates. Tauer and Alex Borsgard had two hits each in the win.
