A stellar playoff run came to an end for the Windom Eagles Wednesday, as Montevideo rallied for a 5-2 victory in the Section 3AA playoffs at Marshall.
The loss ended the Eagles’ season with a 16-10 overall record.
Windom got out to a fast start, scoring a run just three pitches into the game. Quintin Tietz lined the first pitch he saw for a double down the left-field line. Soren Nielsen beat out a potential sacrifice bunt, putting runners on the corners. Hayden Tietz then plated the run with a squeeze bunt.
The Eagles had an opportunity to blow the game open early, loading the bases on a walk and two bunt singles to start the second inning. However, two strikeouts and a groundout ended the threat with no runs scored.
Montevideo tied the game at 1-1 on an RBI double in the third inning, but the Eagles regained the lead in the top of the fourth. Stevie Meyer led off with a single and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Joe Walinga laid down a sacrifice bunt and Matthew Voehl plated the run with a sacrifice fly.
Montevideo tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single.
The Thunderhawks then took the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth. Ben Gunlogson gave Montevideo the lead with a solo home run. Montevideo then put two runners in scoring position on a bloop single and a double. A sacrifice fly from Gannon Reidinger and an RBI single from Landon Olson gave Montevideo a 5-2 lead.
The Eagles were able to get a runner on base with a walk in the sixth, but were retired in order in the seventh to end the game.
Jackson Joyce took the complete-game pitching loss, allowing 14 hits and two walks while striking out two.
