The Windom Eagles did the little things to keep their season going Monday night at Marshall, defeating top-seeded Fairmont 8-5 to stay alive in the elimination bracket of the Section 3AA Tournament.
Fairmont got on the board first, but the Eagles created havoc in the top of the second, courtesy of the bunt.
Stevie Meyer drew a leadoff walk and Joe Walinga beat out a bunt single. Matthew Voehl then bunted, reaching on an error that allowed Meyer to score. Erickson then reached on a bunt, scoring Walinga. A balk plated a third run. Soren Nielsen then bunted, reaching on a throwing error that allowed two runs to score for a 5-1 lead.
Fairmont added single runs in the bottom of the second and in the sixth.
In the seventh, the Eagles added some insurance. Jackson Joyce singled and Meyer ripped an RBI double to left field. Matthew Voehl drew a walk. Then, Erickson, reached on an error, which allowed both pinch runner Ben Ludewig and Voehl to race home for an 8-3 lead.
With two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh, Fairmont’s Merritt Pomerenke lofted a ball to right field that got past the Eagle defense. Jackson Anderson hustled and made a perfect relay to Charles Erickson, who fired home. Catcher Hayden Tietz made a sweep tag to retire Fairmont’s Luke Haefner, providing a thrilling end to an 8-5 Eagle victory.
Meyer, Erickson and Anderson each had two hits in the win.
Quintin Tietz worked the first 6-1/3 innings for the pitching win, allowing seven hits and five walks while fanning six.
Monday’s stormy weather in part of the state created a schedule backlog for the rest of the tournament.
Monday’s elimination game between Morris/Chokio-Alberta and New London-Spicer was postponed. That was slated to be played Tuesday at 5 p.m. in Marshall, with the winner playing again at 7 p.m. against Windom.
The winner of the last game Tuesday will return to Marshall Wednesday at 5 p.m. to take on Montevideo in the true-second matchup. That winner will then face Luverne Thursday for the section title at a site to be determined.
