The Windom Eagle baseball team avenged two losses earlier in the season Tuesday evening, hanging on late for a 4-3 victory over Pipestone in the Section 3AA playoff opening round at Island Park.
The Arrows jumped to a quick lead, scoring two runs in the first five batters of the game on an RBI triple and an RBI single.
But the Eagles battled back, taking the lead in the bottom of the third. Soren Nielsen lofted an RBI single to right-center, then Hayden Tietz ripped a two-run single to left, giving the Eagles a 3-2 lead.
It stayed that way until the fifth inning. Quintin Tietz walked, stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Jackson Joyce drew a two-out walk. Then, without stopping at first, Joyce bolted for second base, creating a rundown. A moment of hesitation by the Arrows was all Tietz needed to race home, sliding safely ahead of the throw for a 4-2 lead.
The Arrows got a run back in the top of the sixth on an RBI single. Then, in the seventh, Pipestone led off the inning with a walk. The runner advanced on a wild pitch and a groundout. But with the tying run on third base, a strikeout and a groundout to shortstop ended the threat and the game.
Quintin Tietz picked up the pitching win, working the first six innings. He allowed five hits, walked one and struck out 10. Charles Erickson pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up a save, striking out one.
