Johnnattan Josue Cortes Otero, a resident of Windom, is being charged with felony domestic assault.
The charge against Cortes Otero stems from an incident that occurred on April 28, in Windom. According to the complaint, Cortes Otero is accused of assaulting a family or household member.
The statement of probable cause, submitted by the Windom police, details the events leading to the charge. On the evening of April 28, a Windom police officer responded to a report of an assault at a residence. Upon arrival, the officer encountered Otero, who claimed there was a video proving his innocence. Cortes Otero was described as agitated and was subsequently detained.
According to the complaint, Otero reportedly told the officer that he had an argument with his stepson, which escalated into a physical altercation. A video of the incident, shown to officers by the reporting party, depicted Otero and the victim, his stepson, in a physical struggle. The video showed Cortes Otero striking the victim multiple times.
The victim sustained scratches on his chest and a large mark on his forehead. The reporting party, according to the complaint, also suggested that Otero might have been using methamphetamine.
If convicted, Otero faces five years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
