The Windom Eagle softball team tried to slow down a strong Martin County West squad in a steady rain Thursday, but the Mavericks rallied late to claim an 11-10 victory at Welcome.
MCW raced to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first and four in the second to take a 7-0 lead.
The Eagles battled back in the fourth inning. Anja Nielsen hit an RBI double, Reagan Haugen drew a bases-loaded walk, Addisyn Powers ripped a two-run double and Addison Evans hit an RBI single, cutting the deficit to 7-5.
The Eagles then took the lead in the top of the sixth. Alivia Letcher scored on a throwing error, Elliot O’Donnell and Nielsen hit RBI singles and Brita Tjentland smashed a two-run triple, giving Windom a 10-7 lead.
But MCW answered in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run triple, a fielder’s choice and an RBI single to take an 11-10 lead.
The Eagles put two runners on base in the top of the seventh, but had the potential tying run thrown out at the plate. A strikeout and a groundout ended the game.
Powers had three hits in the loss. Charlee Huska, Nielsen and Evans had two hits each.
Anja Nielsen took the pitching loss, allowing 12 hits and three walks in five innings. She struck out six.
