The Windom Eagle softball team took a pair of tough losses Thursday, dropping both games of a doubleheader at Luverne by identical 8-6 scores.
In the opener, the Eagles held the lead on two occasions, but Luverne rallied in the bottom of the fifth inning to take the lead for good.
Windom got on the board on a Cardinal error in the second inning, then had an RBI double from Anja Nielsen in the third for a 2-0 lead.
Luverne answered with a run in the third and four in the fourth, but the Eagles retook the lead in the fifth. Windom scored on a passed ball, then got a two-run double from Addisyn Powers and a sacrifice fly from Brita Tjentland.
But Luverne regained the lead with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Windom had the potential tying run at the plate in the seventh, but a strikeout and a grountout ended the game.
Nielsen had four hits in the loss. She also took the pitching loss, allowing 10 hits and a walk while striking out five.
In the nightcap, both teams put up big innings early. Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the first, Windom got on the board with a Charlee Huska RBI single.
Then, down 6-1 in second, the Eagles rallied to tie the game. Elliot O’Donnell hit an RBI single, Reagan Haugen scored on a wild pitch, Nielsen hit a two-run double and eventually scored on a wild pitch, tying the game at 6-6.
But Luverne regained the lead in the top of the third with an RBI single, then iced the win with a home run in the seventh.
Nielsen had two hits in the loss. She also took the pitching loss, allowing 15 hits while fanning seven.

Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove’s offense came to life in the middle innings Thursday as the Falcons claimed a 10-2 win over Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda at Walnut Grove.
RRC/WWG broke a scoreless tie in the third inning on a Deann Roiger RBI single.
In the fourth, Natalie Wahl hit a two-run single. Then, in the fifth, Kennedi Carter drew a bases-loaded walk, two runs scored on errors and Roiger drew a bases-loaded walk.
The Falcons sealed the win in the sixth on a two-run double from Carlie Ross.
Wahl led the Falcons with three hits.
Ross earned the pitching win, scattering four hits and two walks while striking out seven.

MCC 000 142 x = 7-11-2
Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey couldn’t overcome a deficit in the middle innings Thursday, dropping a 7-5 decision to Murray County Central in Slayton.
MCC scored once in the fourth and four times in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
MLAC tried to battle back, scoring in the sixth on a Nadia Phommachan groundout and an Ashlyn Pfeiffer RBI single.
MCC stretched the lead to 7-2 in the bottom of the sixth, but MLAC tried to battle back in the seventh. Two runs scored when Ella Dockter reached on an error and Phommachan hit an RBI single. But with the potential tying run at the plate, a strikeout ended the game.
Julia Brinkman, Ellamae Peters and Kylie Phommachan each had two hits in the loss.
Ashlyn Pfeiffer took the pitching loss for the Wolverines.
