Cottonwood County Emergency Management is reminding people in the county that there will be two county-wide tornado drills this afternoon and evening.
The drills are held in conjunction with Severe Weather Awareness Week.
The first drill, which is aimed at schools, businesses, hospitals and other organizations, will sound at 1:45 p.m. The second drill, which is intended for families and second shift workers, will be at 6:45 p.m.
In both instances, National Weather Service offices will issue simulated tornado warnings, which will activate tornado sirens throughout the county.
Residents are reminded that during this drill you should practice as if it were a real tornado, which includes going to the basement. Also suggested is getting under a table, work bench or some other sturdy furniture to protect yourself from falling debris.
If you are unable to get to a basement, go to a small, interior room on the lowest floor. Closets, bathrooms and interior halls give you the best protection in most cases.
