Early miscues and cold shooting combined to doom the Red Rock Central girls basketball team Thursday, as the Falcons fell 80-56 to Murray County Central in the pigtail round of the Section 3A playoffs at Slayton.
RRC struggled against MCC’s pressure defense early in the game, allowing the Rebels to build an early lead. But the Falcons were able to settle in, forcing the Rebels to back off the pressure.
MCC was able to push its lead up to 16 points by halftime and maintain the lead much of the second half, despite RRC having its most productive offensive night of the entire season.
Tia Donkersloot dominated the inside in the game for the Falcons, scoring a career-high 25 points. Kendra Schroeder added 11 points in the loss.
MLAC 24-20 = 44
Cleveland 30-28 = 58
A late first-half surge lifted Cleveland into the lead, and a strong start to the second half gave the Clippers a 58-44 victory over Mt. Lake Area-Comfrey in the pigtail round of the Section 2A Tournament Thursday in Cleveland.
MLAC got off to a good start on offense, but hit a cold spell late in the opening half that carried into the start of the second half.
Meanwhile, Cleveland’s duo of Ava Hahn and Taylor McCabe combined for 26 of their team’s 30 first-half points and finished with 37 of the team’s 58.
A rough outing from the free throw line kept the Wolverines from rallying in the second half, as MLAC went 4-of-14 from the stripe as a team in the game.
Julia Brinkman led the Wolverines with 12 points in the loss. Ellamae Peters added 11 points.
